Poetry Submissions

WHAT CAN I SEND IN?

Vita Brevis publishes poetry–especially from unpublished or emerging poets. I charge no reading fees, accept unsolicited pieces, and keep poetry submissions open year-round. (I no longer accept previously published poems.)

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR?

I tend to favor short structured poems over long experimental or post-modern ones. But that’s just the Vita Brevis style, not the requirement.

Here’s an example of a structured poem: Family Portrait – Ronald E. Shields
Here’s a great less traditional one: Hommarus americanus – Shanna Maybright

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY POETRY SUBMISSIONS ARE ACCEPTED?

I respond to every single submission, whether it’s accepted or not. As a rule-of-thumb, if I don’t get back to you after four to five weeks, let me know. I may have missed your submission,¬†or the submission pool was especially busy.

ANY TIPS FOR GETTING PUBLISHED?

You bet. Here’s an article I wrote on publishing your poems. And here’s another on how to find poetry magazines that are right for you.
