We break it into pieces
weave and twist the fabric
of our blood and history
through ancestral veins
which pulse with the ashes
of our memories
we have burned into our cells
and given to our children
our curly hair, freckles
and minds
and as we sit on our glass-covered porches
we can watch our reflections
and wonder if
we should have done things differently
