First/Last Page – Poetry by Holly Day

Richard Diebenkorn – Seated Woman, Green Interior

flames darken the single sheet of paper
some words burns brighter than the rest
typewriter lies dead in the corner
angry teeth inlaid with rusted iron bits

typewriter burns bright in the corner
on the floor, keyboard split, askew
carefully-set pieces of ebony screaming
a mouthful of flames darkening the neatly-typed words.
