Having once emerged
from the gray of night
in a city that knew of me
and the life I led
as well as I knew
its streets and alleyways
I sought redemption
in the purity of light
by gentle streams,
rocky shores
and tulip fields
but found no more
than another shade of gray
too tempting to escape
for it came from an even
darker place
deep inside of me.

Neil, while your poem paints a darker palette than that of Klee, the poem, although nicely dense, presents in clarity an image that I think even the artist would appreciate. I certainly did.
