(This is is outdated. See our list of poetry magazines with high acceptance rates or poetry magazines for established poets (much more selective)
Seeing that most mainstream publications have a (much) lower acceptance rate than Ivy League colleges, I’ve been compiling a list of approachable poetry journals to give emerging poets a chance at getting their work out in the world. Here are just a few, and if you enjoy this post, you might also want to read my guide for submitting poetry.
Here’s what I found this week:
A List of Approachable Poetry Journals:
Mused
Acceptance Rate: 50-60%
+ Professional
+ Character (published on each solstice and equinox)

Poem Hunter

– Not a “publication” but a website that allows you to submit your poetry into their index. There seems to be a fairly active community there. Worth a look!
– More of a community and forum than a “publication”, but exposure is exposure

Thank you. A helpful service indeed.
I hope to keep it going for as long as I can! It’s good to hear that you’re getting seomthing out of it, Ben! There’s plenty more planned for the future
I appreciate the annotations!
That’s good feedback to have! This index is getting so long, I’m also thinking about creating a table for it — maybe with a way to sort it by acceptance rate or annotation. We’ll see!
Brian, thank you so much for taking the time to share all this info! Very grateful to you!
Great to hear from you! 🙂 I’m glad you’ve found this useful. The index is just one of the many resources I plan to work on in the future
Brian, very useful, thank you!
I am snowed with work but this weekend I will keep my promise.
On another note, the poetry you publish is terrific!
Have a fabulous day 🙂
Believe me–I understand! As for the poems, I’ve had some incredible poets send their work in recently. They’ve made my job way too easy!
Best of luck getting through your work! I hope your days shapes up well
Are you aware of tuckmagazine.com/category/poetrytuckmag/poetry/ or https://thebezine.com) I have had work accepted there, but I don’t know what their acceptance level is. Still, you might want to look into them.
Many thanks for the lead! These types of publications are hard to track down since many don’t use SEO. I’ll try to reach out to the editor for the rate or find it elsewhere.
Thanks, Ben!
Thanks so much Brian. You are giving back to the community in more ways one can imagine.Really appreciate your help and efforts
I’m not giving anymore than you all have given me! Thanks for the kind words, Megha!
