We’ve one foot in the present
And another in the ancestral past.
That’s how Dr. Elling signed off,
Uncertain if it really made his point,
But happy with its eloquent ring.
Sometimes our tone is more triumphant
Than our ideas, he decided. But that’s alright.
Sometimes that’s just what we need
Painting: Edward Hopper – Compartment Car

Thanks!
One foot in the present and other in the past..such a beautiful use of words.
A beautiful and very thoughtful poem…I loved it!
This is so good on so many levels. “Sometimes our tone is more triumphant Than our ideas” is so true. Thus is a wonderful poem.
Nice lines
Yes, indeed! I really enjoyed this.
The Hopper painting is perfect, too.
Beautiful and very true as well
